Bright colored bars and polished medals

Honor Those Who Serve

Every state has some memorial honoring the military in some way.  There are statues, gardens, parks, ponds, reflecting pools, waterfalls, etc. that were created to honor those who help keep America safe.   They are there to help us reflect on our freedom — the price paid to enjoy living here in the land of the free.  Take time to enjoy these places.  Tell children and grand children why these places are here.  Honor those who serve!

Two-Star Banner

Seven months after my first son left for Iraq, son number two followed.  the same fear washed over me as he gave me the news over the phone from where he was stationed over seas.  I was proud of both of them and replaced the one-star banner with two stars.   I prayed for their safety and gained a new appreciation for the military and their selfless sacrifice!

One Star Military Service Banner

I know the fear and pride of having a son serve his country.  As I gave him a hug at the airport, I squeezed a little tighter because I didn’t know if that would be the last hug that I would give him.  The war in Iraq became real and personal to me.  The one star Military Service Banner hung in my front window with pride and hope that I’d see my son again.

Remember the many who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy today. Freedom comes at a cost — always hold it dear!

Remember Those Who Serve

My Dad was a veteran of WWII and the Korean conflict but rarely talked about his experiences. But once my two sons joined the army and served in Iraq, both at the same time, Dad seemed to find comradeship with them. I enjoyed listening to them compare notes — the differences then and now. I am proud of them and their willingness to serve so that I can enjoy the freedoms that I have today.

This month is a good time to remember those who have and are serving in the military. A special “hug” to all of you!
